About the last thing that I would think of when you say Carnegie, PA is simple, well designed bags. But moop would like you to think otherwise. The company was started by husband and wife team Wendy Downs and Jeremy Boyle in 2007 in Massachusetts seeking to make high quality, handmade bags. After realizing they needed more space and since their business was primarily online, the couple moved their entire operation to a larger space in Pittsburgh (Jeremy's hometown) continuing their creation of great designed and built bags in Pittsburgh's West End.
Since their move, they have expanded their offerings. The duo now makes everything from messenger bags to totes to clutches, covering all the bases from an afternoon of shopping in the Strip to an evening out at Heinz Hall; all simple and hand stitched. I've been dropping hints to anyone that will listen that my laptop needs, no, deserves to be in their grey waxed canvas messenger bag (seen above, further hints). Their bags are primarily sold online (http://www.moopshop.com and etsy) making it easy for those interested to find them! You can even pick them up in Carnegie and weasel your way into checking out the studio space, all the cooler!
And while moop might be still gaining traction in Pittsburgh (though as I wrote this a girl sitting next to me in Lawrenceville had her new backpack with her), the word is out. The bags have been seen in People Magazine, Lucky Magazine, as well as a slug of online blogs. So expand your local offerings from your CSA and check out moop! You'll be be supporting local design and looking great while you do it!
